A Trump administration would have to reverse more than half of the Obama administration’s international aid to Africa, a senior State Department official said Wednesday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the subject publicly, said that the State Department would be able to give “significant relief” to Ethiopia and Somalia if Trump succeeds in eliminating the United States’ longstanding support for those countries.
The Trump administration’s budget would eliminate $30 million of the $400 million in aid that the United Nations and African Union are providing each year.
The United States has a $20 billion annual aid package with Africa.
